Blog 19: NYCC 2021 Look Back

So…..last week was pretty eventful. I made a long awaited pilgrimage back to the sacred grounds of Javits Center to attend the glorious event of New York Comic-Con! It felt really good to be back on the convention scene ever since it was cancelled during the “year that will not be named”. It was as if a part of me was missing during that time, but when I first stepped through those doors of the Javits Center, I felt whole once more. There is a lot of ground we need to cover, so let’s get down to the nitty gritty of my time there.

The Atmosphere

There was a pretty mellow vibe amongst the crowd at NYCC, everyone there was wearing a medical mask (which wasn’t that surprising), but the convention as a whole was not crowded. I mean it was crowded, but it wasn’t the normal kind of NYCC crowded. It was more “mall food court” crowded than the standard “Black Friday mall” crowded, and found that pretty comforting. I would usually complain about the showfloor being too crowded for me to walk around, but this time the show floor felt more open. A person can actually breathe on that floor for once.

The booths were all spaced out, making viewing and purchasing merch easier. There were so many cool items on the floor, but nothing much to grab my attention. I just bought myself a cool sword and a Deadpool shirt (that may be adapted into a future cosplay). My parents brought some posters to frame, and my brother bought a tamagotchi for his girlfriend (it was really sweet).

My friends on the other hand spent an ass-load of money buying merch. They were carrying bags of posters, plushies, pins, and a freaking Attack on Titan mystery box. It was hilarious walking around with them trying to carry all their things.

The People

Meeting up with friends is one of the main things I look forward to when I head out to conventions, but unfortunately my usual cosplay gang couldn’t come this year (mainly because they went on different days), but I did get to catch up with some other good pals. Luckily it was all drama-free (well there was some behind the scenes drama, but it’s not worth getting into), and we all had a blast walking the showfloor.

We talked about comics, anime (mostly Jojo and Chainsaw Man), and we chatted about our personal affairs. I always felt that conventions are more fun when you go with people you like, such as friends and family.

What makes the experience even more fun is when you run into friends that you didn’t even know were going to be there (just hope you run into friends you like, because it’ll be more awkward than Zoom college lecture if you run into someone you don’t like).

The Panels

I reserved seats to see two panels the day I went, and let’s just say they both took some unexpecting turns. The first one I attened was a fan preimere for the new Chucky TV series airing on USA and SyFy, and I can honestly say that the series looks promising.

The show seems to be focusing more on teenagers, which is close to their Child’s Play roots, and this show is a clear continuation of the Cult of Chucky movie. We were introduced to an interesting cast of new characters, and it seems that Chucky has his work “cut” out for him. I am also happy to report that there is graphic language and gore present in the show, so that’s a really good sign of a fun series. I’m pretty invested into seeing where this show takes us, and I look forward to watching it when it airs on TV, but choosing between USA and SyFy will be a tough choice.

Overview

NYCC 2021 was a very fun experience, and again it felt great to be back there. Hopefully things will be a lot calmer for NYCC 2022 till the point when they start selling multi-day passes because I miss going for three days. Also I hope they chill with the whole medical mask rule because I miss wearing my regular cosplay mask, which I know sounds weird to say but it’s just something about wearing my original masks that feel so liberating.

So yeah, that’s it. That was my time at New York Comic-Con. There is nothing else to tell.

…..

Oh, you’re probably noticing that I only spoke about one panel when I said I went to two. I don’t feel like talking about that panel, at least not here. Too much happened at the panel for it to be compacted into one small part of this blog. So stay tuned for Blog 20 where I will talk about the second panel, and I have to say it was quite a shocker!!
