Blog 18: Calm Before The Storm

I’ve been a little behind on all this drama about the lawsuit of Disney vs the heirs of Stan Lee, Gene Colan, and Steve Ditko, but here’s what I understand so far…..

So apparently the heirs of these famous comic book creators are suing Disney to acquire the rights of characters such as Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Black Widow, Captain Marvel, and many more characters to even list (basically the whole MCU roster), but now Marvel is counter suing stating that the characters were created when Lee, Colan, and Ditko were employees at Marvel, which means that the company owns the characters, not the creators or their heirs.

If Disney happens to lose this lawsuit, and that’s a big “if”, the rest of Phase 4 and the entirety of Phase 5 will be thrown into shambles. The new Doctor Strange movie probably won’t happen, Spider-Man will be without a home, and the possible future movies with the X-Men and Fantastic Four will cease to exist. Simply put, the MCU will be utterly destroyed.

I honestly have conflicting feelings about this whole situation because on one hand I do feel that the creators should have the rights to their creations, but on the other hand I’m really looking forward to the new MCU movies and tv shows. Phase 4 is finally doing something that the fans have been dreaming of seeing on the big screen.

MULTIVERSE MOVIES!!!!!!!

With shows like WandaVison, Loki, and What if…? are pushing the MCU’s storytelling skills to the limit, and I’m all for it! Sure I’ve said in the past that Marvel is going to complete shit with having almost all their new content (comics and some films/shows) catering to the Twitter Puritans and other political agendas, but maybe the new Phase will restore my faith in Marvel. I just pray that they don’t fuck this up, especially with how they will introduce the X-Men (or X-People) into the MCU, but with this lawsuit I’m not so sure. Only time will tell what the MCU’s future is.

In other news….

I will be venturing off the NYCC this Friday!!!!! It has been a whole year since I’ve been to a convention of any kind, and I am so psyched to come back. Unfortunately due to the CDC guidelines for the virus, I might not be able to embrace the full experience of the con. I’m indifferent to wearing the medical mask at NYCC, I always wear masks to Comic-Con, but the fact that we have to be visibly seen with the masks on is a bummer. This icon is on the health guidelines page on the official NYCC website:

I honestly feel a little attacked that they used this particular mask outline for their “No Costume Masks” icon. Then we have the whole social distancing thing, which may make it difficult to take photos with other cosplayers, but I don’t know how enforced that rule is going to be (or even at all for that matter). What I do know is that despite all those guidelines, I will still have a lot of fun there. I have RSVP for the world premiere panle for Syfy’s Chucky series and a special Ghostbusters: Afterlife panel, which will be showing off some never before seen footage from the new movie. It would be sick if they showed the entire movie at the convention, but I highly doubt it.

Just thinking about NYCC is getting me so pumped. I will be taking a lot of photos while I’m there, so be sure to stay tuned on my Instagram @legendpool, and I will be discussing my time at NYCC in the next blog. Until next time readers, this is your friendly neighborhood Deadpool, signing off.
