Blog 17: The Stupidity of “Cancel Culture”

People just love getting cranky on the internet, don’t they? As the title above suggests, I hate Cancel Culture with a burning passion. What originally started as a way to expose sexual harassment in the workplace during the Me Too Movement, has devolved into a toxic movement that targets random people based on weak accusations and meaningless, conflicting opinions. One of the most recent examples of this “movement” in action is the situation with Nintendo’s reveal of the voice cast for the new Mario movie.

During the recent Nintendo Direct livestream on YouTube; Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, Keegan-Michael Key, and Jack Black were all revealed to be part of the cast for Illumination’s Mario movie, and the reception was a little mixed to say the least. Some people were happy with this cast, some people were a little confused with the line-up, and then you had people who were outright furious, specifically with Chris Pratt being casted as the voice of Mario. Now some of these angry people were upset that Illumination didn’t choose Charles Martinet, who is the voice of Mario in the video games, to voice Mario in the movie, but the majority who are upset are the people who are trying to cancel Chris Pratt. Let me explain….

For some time now, the Twitter Puritians have been trying to cancel Chris Pratt under the claim that he is a republican Trump-supporter/anti-LGBTQ Christian, and it just sounds like fucking bullshit. From what I gathered about this whole situation is that Chris Pratt is a part of this Christain Church called “Zoe Church ”, which might be connected to another Christian Church that is associated with far-right and anti-LGBTQ beliefs. I’m not entirely sure how true those claims are, but what I do know is that Chris Pratt has never really said anything that could make him out to be homophobic or transphobic. Also there is no proof (at least none that I could find) of his political affiliation anywhere, and even if he is a republican, I highly doubt he’s a Trump-supporter. May I remind you who his father-in-law is?

The former governor of California, and out-spoken Trump-hater, Arnold Schwarzenegger. If Pratt has ever admitted to be a Trump-supporter, the headlines would be “Marvel Star, Chris Pratt, Reported Missing”, and we all would know how it happened.

The amount of hate this movie is getting already is ridiculous, and it’s all because of a bunch of butt-hurt morons on Twitter. It’s hilarious how they think complainning to Nintendo is going to change anything, but thank God that Nintendo is smart enough to ignore them.

You see, this is the main issue with Cancel Culture. If a person who is the target for cancellation “bends the knee” and apologizes for these accusations, no matter how weak or dumb the accusations may be, that gives the angry folk a false sense that they’ll get whatever they want if they throw a tantrum. Now I know that some people will say that Cancel Culture has done some good things such as exposing people like Harvey “Cangofuckhimself”, but there were victim testimonies and other pieces of evidence that proved the sexual harassment accusations to be true, and he was rightly punished. This new wave of Cancel Culture is full of young adults who are probably SJW just to gain views on the internet, and they only sought out to cancel shit that hurt their feelings.

With how sensitive and political society is becoming, it’s almost not fun to be a fan of anything at this point. What worse is when Cancel Culture tries to cancel old movies, tv shows, and music that I personally identify with. Take the “Looney Tunes” for an example, woke culture is saying that those shows were a bad influence on children for being crude and misogynistic, which is ironic since the “Looney Tunes” were originally created for adults. How would you feel if the shows and movies you grew up with, the media that helped you become the cool person you are today, was suddenly deemed “racist” or “sexist” by Cancel Culture? It can make a person think “If these people say the shows I liked as a kid are horrible and demeaning to others, does that make me a horrible person?”

Also can we talk about how Cancel Culture can go after people who share an opinion that doesn’t mesh well with theirs because God forbid somebody has a different opinion? This one YouTuber by the name of Gothix almost got canceled last year because she felt that casting Ariel as a black woman in the new live-action “The Little Mermaid” movie was unnecessary and a sign of Disney pandering to make quick money. My message to the “Cancel Culture” movement is that maybe instead of hate messaging people you don’t like, why don’t you just ignore them? Do what most comic fans are doing about the new Marvel and DC comic books, and find something that pleases your interests. Marvel and DC comics are political pamphlets now, and because of that we’re all switching to Team Manga. If you Purirtains can’t do that, then just fuck off and take your narcissim off the internet! If we can all just admit that we’re all a bunch of assholes in our own ways, instead of trying to act like we’re hot shit, I believe the world would be a much better place.
